Charles McPherson Concert and Special Exhibition Opening

The Museum of Making Music welcomes internationally renowned jazz saxophonist Charles McPherson for a concert-conversation event celebrating the launch of the Museum’s latest special exhibition – The Sound of Sax:  How the Saxophone Won America’s Soul.

McPherson has more than 50 years of jazz experience and has shared his music with the world through tours in Europe, Japan, Africa and South America. In addition to performing, McPherson will discuss the saxophone’s impact on music, society and the music industry. He will be joined by San Diego musicians Kamau Kenyatta on piano and Rob Thorsen on bass.

The Sound of Sax explores the story of the saxophone from its birth, setbacks and eventual acceptance by musicians, listeners and composers. The exhibition features a variety of saxophones, ranging from historic pieces hand-built by Adolphe Sax, to models associated with major musical styles such as vaudeville, jazz, rock and classical.
