Gun Safety Event In North County Offers Cash For Unwanted Firearms

Free firearm lock boxes and trigger locks will also be distributed while supplies last.

SAN MARCOS, CA — A gun buyback event will take place this weekend in North San Diego County in an effort to get unwanted weapons off the streets, authorities said.

The gun safety event is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 18 at the San Marcos Sheriff's Station.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Office has partnered with the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, Escondido Police Department, Carlsbad Police Department, Oceanside Police Department, University Police Department at Cal State San Marcos and Palomar College Police Department to collect the guns in exchange for gift cards.

People who donate handguns, rifles and shotguns will receive $100 gift cards, while those who trade in assault weapons will receive $200 gift cards, according to the sheriff's office. Free firearm lock boxes and trigger locks will also be distributed while supplies last.

Firearms must be in working order, unloaded and placed in the trunk of the vehicle dropping them off. A deputy or officer will provide instructions, officials said.

All weapons collected will be destroyed, according to the sheriff's office. Residents turning in weapons can remain anonymous.

The San Marcos Sheriff's Station is at 182 Santar Place in San Marcos.
