Help your kids knock out summer volunteer hours

Between summer vacations and hanging out with friends, your kids still have those endless lazy days  with nothing to do.  So why not fill those boring days with something productive?  The community is filled with volunteer opportunities that will help with those required high school volunteer hours while having fun at the same time.

1. Go to the Beach
 Yes, you can still get service hours while hanging out at the beach. The Surf Rider Foundation host regular beach clean ups and have booths that need volunteers in early June. For more information and to sign up, go to the Surfrider website.

 2. Learn how business works
For any girls who are  interested in business, learning what it is like to work the floor is a great opportunity. My Girlfriend’s Closet gives clothes to less fortunate girls and is annually held once each summer. Helping teens and young women pick out what shirts would look best on them, or giving a single working mom a new professional wardrobe gives the words community service a deeper meaning.

3. Help out in the Library
 The Dove and Cole Libraries have opportunities for any type of personality. Each of the programs also has unique volunteer time requirements so there is a place for even the busiest people. For those of you with a green thumb help by gardening the Cole Reference Atrium Garden. The garden is a focal point of the library and gives helpful information of local plants.

4. Work with kids
 The Rady Children’s Hospital encourages students to get involved with the hospital. Currently  there is an array of special events one can take part in. Opurtunities vary from assisting in the Shamu & You Family Walk to answering telephones in the Radiothon. For students who are thinking of going into medical majors or want experience working in hospitals, the hospital will be accepting new applicants in the early fall. With so many opportunities, pick a foundation or program that is relatable so community service is more enjoyable and rewarding.
