Iconic Carlsbad 5000 Set For 40th Race Along Coast

CARLSBAD, CA — The Carlsbad 5000 will celebrate its 40th anniversary Sunday, drawing more than 8,000 runners and walkers to the coastal community for what organizers call the "World's Fastest 5K."

The iconic road race, first held in 1986, has grown into one of the sport's most recognized events, attracting elite athletes, recreational runners, families and walkers from around the world. Over four decades, the event has produced 16 world records and eight U.S. records, with more than 195,000 participants representing all 50 states and 21 countries.

"The Carlsbad 5000 is the premier 5K road race in the world and has been a North County tradition for 40 years," said John Smith, owner of Groundwork Endurance, which organizes the event.

Organizers said this year's milestone event will include tributes to the race's history, including honoring six "Legacy Runners" who have participated in every Carlsbad 5000 since the inaugural race. A commemorative banner will also be flown over the Pacific Ocean during the race.

American distance running standouts Meb Keflezighi and Deena Kastor will serve as event ambassadors. Kastor set a women's world record on the course in 2002 with a time of 14 minutes, 53 seconds.

"The Carlsbad 5000 has always been one of the most special races in the country because it brings together every level of runner," Kastor said.

"You have Olympians, professional athletes, longtime participants and first-time runners sharing the same streets and celebrating the sport together," Kastor said. "Reaching 40 years is an incredible milestone and speaks to how much this race means to the running community."

Race day begins at 7 a.m. with the masters women's division for runners 40 and older, the first of nine races scheduled throughout the morning. The elite men's race is set for 12:30 p.m., followed by the elite women's race at 12:35 p.m.

A total prize purse of $25,000 will be awarded, including $5,000 for the top male and female finishers and a $5,000 bonus to any athlete who breaks the American record.

Winners in each division will receive custom handmade surfboard trophies, a nod to the city's surf culture and beach-town identity.

The event will also feature a post-race celebration known as the "Party by the Sea," with a beer garden and live music.
