Sad Day: The Flip Camera Is Dying

Cisco, the company that owns Flip, says it's restructuring, shutting down Flip operations, and eliminating 550 employees.

I have been a die-hard Flip fan for the past two years. News Tuesday that the Flip will be no more is shocking and sad. Many Carlsbad Patch videos have been shot using the Flip camera, including the .

The New York Times reports, "The camera went on sale in 2007 and went on to dominate the camcorder market, selling two million units in its first two years and remaining the top-selling camcorder on Amazon to this day."

I've tried Kodak's Zi8 (which is similar to the Flip) but went back to using the Flip. The Zi8 offers an external microphone jack; however, in my opinion the Flip's audio still seemed better. The first day I used the Zi8 there was a buzz in the audio. I had to call customer support and download software to make the buzz go away. The Flip also felt more durable than the Zi8.

I say get the Flip while you can; it's a great video camera. I also encourage charitable organizations and educators to get free Flip cameras while they are still available using the Spotlight program and Educator program.
