Back in the 1970s, the Trevino family lived in Carlsbad- a few miles away from the Club. Out of 9 kids, 6 were boys. Their father completed two tours in Vietnam and the kids were left at home with their mother. During this time, the family was poor, and sadly experienced food insecurity.

As fate would have it, oldest brother Rick led his siblings to the Boys Club in Carlsbad (now the Boys & Girls Club), and that experience changed their lives. There were certainly great things to keep pre-teens like the Trevino boys busy and engaged. The Club fed them, encouraged an interest in sports, and helped shape them into outstanding young men and citizens. Rick even got a job at the Club during his teenage years and said “every day was ‘take your brother to work’ day.”

One of those Trevino kids, Danny, passed away on October 10, 2021. His family was looking for a meaningful way to honor his legacy, and they found it when they contacted the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. The Trevino Family has become a “community partner” with the Club, offering scholarships to those kids who need it the most.

“The Boys Club helped shape my dad into an absolutely amazing person and helped him to stop the generational cycle of poverty,” said his daughter, Stacy. “He led a happy and successful life and I'm so proud to be his daughter.”

Danny’s wife, Imelda and three daughters- Laura, Stacy, and Valerie, and their family members visited the Club on the one year milestone anniversary of his death, bringing snacks for the kids and seeing the gym sign that was hung in his memory. In fact, it’s the very same gym where Danny learned how to play basketball- a sport he loved his entire life.

“This is hugely emotional for us. My dad loved helping people, and we can’t think of a better way to honor him than to pay it forward,” Stacy explains. “We aren’t sure how we can ever repay the favor of changing our dads’ trajectory, but this is a good start!”

“It was so much fun to have Stacy’s mini-family reunion here at the Club, states Village Club Director Abby Snyder. “It was truly amazing to witness the deep history and impact the Club has had on its members and families.”
