My family went through a scary situation recently. In the same day, in fact within the same hour, we lost my husband's grandfather and grandmother. He was working in a grape field and had a heart attack. She had a heart attack when she was told he passed away.
When we got the phone call about the deaths, our first thought went to their funeral expenses. We knew that Grandma had a burial plot, but we didn't know about Grandpa. We also didn't know what type of life insurance each of them had.
Luckily, the had both taken out policies for life insurance for elderly people. The policies combined were enough to get Grandpa a burial plot next to Grandma and to have a funeral for both of them. There wasn't much left after that was said and done, but at least the policies covered those expenses.

As all of this was going on, we discovered that my husband's mother didn't have any life insurance. We applied for a policy to cover her final expenses so that we wouldn't have to struggle with paying for her final expenses.
In a way, it was almost like she didn't want to have to think about getting life insurance. I'm not sure how she expects to be able to be buried in the cemetery she chose. I'm not sure how she expects to have the funeral she wants. Fortunately for us, we now know that her final expenses will be taken care of when the time comes.
