What do professional Golfers have that most small business owners don't?

I had the opportunity to attend the Farmers Open at Torrey Pines this weekend. Watching professionals play a game I enjoy at a venue I have played is both entertaining and humbling. Professional golf is a business and professional golfers are small business owners.  It occurred to me; however, that although there are many similarities to other small business owners there is one striking difference. No, it’s not that they can hit a cut out of the rough or play out of the sand with precision although those are both true.

Just like any business owner professional golfers have a team of advisors. As most business owners do, they have an attorney to help them with legal matters and to distribute the value that they create in their business. They also have a CPA to help them protect the value they create as does the average business owner. Another team member pro golfers have is a financial adviser to help them compound the value they create. Most profitable business owners also have a financial adviser.

 So what advisor do they have that small business owners don’t? All successful professional golfers have a coach. Why do they have a coach? They certainly know how to play golf. They are in the top 1% of all golfers on the planet in terms of talent. They have a coach to help them create the most value they can during their career. They don’t just want to be good at golf they want to win.  As we saw this weekend the difference between winning and losing is razor thin. In order to win they have someone that helps them stay on top of their game so they can be the very best that they can be. Business owners can learn something from PGA professionals.
