Volunteers say crowds crossing barriers for photos are scaring seals away and may be shrinking their numbers, and they’re asking locals to help model respectful behavior for out-of-town visitors.

Cannabis Burglary Crew Arrested in Carpinteria (crimevoice.com) — Law enforcement has issued felony warrants for 17 adults after two large cannabis burglaries at a Carpinteria-area cultivation site earlier this year, with several suspects already jailed. Deputies say masked crews stole about 2,000 pounds of cannabis worth over $500,000, and multiple arrests followed traffic collisions in Carpinteria as detectives pieced together identities from surveillance footage.

Housing Project Near Carpinteria Salt Marsh Moves Forward (independent.com) — A judge has cleared the way for a large home to advance toward construction beside the Carpinteria Salt Marsh, despite environmental and cultural concerns raised by Friends of the Carpinteria Salt Marsh and Chumash leaders. Longtime Birnam Wood Bartender Was Victim in Fatal Montecito Traffic Collision (noozhawk.com) — Carpinteria regulars are mourning Pedro Rivera, assistant general manager at Teddy’s By the Sea and longtime Birnam Wood Golf Club bartender, who was fatally struck by a car in Montecito. Friends and colleagues describe him as a warm, steady presence, and a GoFundMe has already raised tens of thousands of dollars to help his family with funeral and other expenses.
