1 Dead, 3 Injured in Early Morning Fatal Crash on I-580

CHP officials say two related collisions occurred early this morning.

A 25-year-old San Francisco woman was killed and three others suffered injuries early this morning in two related collisions on Interstate Highway 580 in Castro Valley, according to the California Highway Patrol. At 4:21 a.m. this morning, a 2014 Kia veered into the center median near the 164th Avenue off-ramp and hit the guardrail, overturning several times and ejecting both occupants in the process.

Drugs are currently believed to be a factor in the solo collision, CHP officials said. The driver, a 32-year-old Fremont resident, sustained major injuries but his passenger did not survive. A 2006 Honda subsequently collided with the Kia, causing it to burst into flames. The Honda’s 73-year-old driver sustained minor injuries and complained of pain after the collision.

A concerned citizen who stopped to help the Kia’s occupants suffered major injuries as a result of the second collision. Drugs and alcohol are not thought to be factors in the second collision between the Kia and the Honda, but the cause of both incidents are still under investigation.
