• San Leandro Man Sentenced For Deadly Castro Valley Marijuana Deal: Report (patch.com) — Castro Valley residents are learning more about the 22-year prison sentence given to a San Leandro man for a 2018 killing during a marijuana deal on John Court near I-580 and I-238. Jurors found him guilty of voluntary manslaughter, not murder, after testimony described a dispute over $20 of marijuana and a claimed self-defense response to a perceived weapon.
• How nearly 2 million California homes must adjust landscaping under just-approved wildfire rule (fresnobee.com) — Homes in Castro Valley's East Bay hills are officially in California's highest wildfire-risk zones and will face new "Zone 0" defensible-space rules over the next several years. The regulations will require clearing flammable materials within 5 feet of structures, tightening landscaping under roof eaves, and eventually replacing nearby wooden fencing and gates with noncombustible materials in designated high-risk areas statewide.
