Police say the suspect allegedly took a cellphone from a victim before running onto the tracks towards the Fruitvale station.

A robbery suspect sent police on a roughly one-hour foot pursuit through the BART tunnels near the Lake Merritt station today, a BART police lieutenant said. Officers responded to the station at 11:20 a.m. on a report of an assault and battery on a train, BART police Lt. Tyrone Forte said.

Forte said the officers later learned that the suspect had allegedly taken a cellphone from a victim before running onto the tracks towards the Fruitvale station. BART riders are facing major delays late this morning in the Dublin/Pleasanton, Fremont, Richmond and Daly City directions because of someone running on the tracks at Lake Merritt, BART dispatchers said.

BART officials reported the police activity at 11:43 a.m. The dispatcher said it’s unclear how long trains will be delayed at the station. Riders are also facing 20-minute delays because of an equipment problem at the South Hayward station, the dispatcher said.
