Castro Valley E-Waste and HHW Collection Event on Aug. 4th

Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan) will hold its CVSan Recycles Day event on Saturday, August 4, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Canyon Middle School (19600 Cull Canyon Road, Castro Valley). This event is a partnership between CVSan and the Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility. Alameda County residents (not businesses) are invited to bring HHW items for disposal (full list at www.cvsan.org/hhw):

• Paint: oil & latex paints, shellac, solvents, stain, thinners
• Adhesives: caulk, cement, epoxy, mortar, putty, stucco, wood glue
• Auto: additives, antifreeze/coolant, batteries, brake fluid, fuel, gear oil, motor oil & filters, transmission fluid/filters, waxes
• Sharps: lancets, needles, syringes in approved sharps containers
• E-Waste: computers, electronic devices, printers, radios, TVs
• Garden: ant traps, fertilizers, gopher bait, herbicides, pesticides, rat poison, sprays
• Drugs: prescription & non-prescription drugs
• Miscellaneous: acids & caustics, bleach & cleaners, fluorescent bulbs, household batteries, photo chemicals, pool chemicals

Remember, these items pose a serious threat to humans and wildlife, and it is illegal to place them in the garbage or dump down the storm drain. This event provides an excellent opportunity for households to remove harmful chemicals from their homes and recycle those old electronics that are taking up space.

Sharps will be accepted in approved sharps containers only. CVSan has 500 sharps containers available for free to Alameda County residents at its office located at 21040 Marshall Street. This is a one-time distribution of the approved, biohazard waste disposal containers to facilitate the collections of sharps at the event.

• Compost: Four 1-cubic foot bags of compost will be distributed to CVSan residents and businesses ONLY on a first come, first served basis. Five Canyons are not in CVSan boundaries.

A photo ID or utility bill displaying an Alameda County address is required for event entry. A limit of 15 gallons of HHW liquids or a total of 125 pounds per vehicle/per trip will be enforced, compliant with laws; however, multiple trips to drop off HHW are allowed.

CVSan General Manager Roland Williams states, “This event will be a convenient way for residents to safely and easily dispose of their household hazardous waste and keeps these materials out of our landfill, groundwater, and bay.”

The following items are not accepted at the Recycles Day event:

• Asbestos, other remediation waste, or radioactive waste
• Ammunition, explosives, compressed gas cylinders
• Appliances (microwaves OK)
• Infectious or medical waste other than home-generated sharps
• Non-residentially generated waste
• Waste generated outside of Alameda County
