Castro Valley Robbery: Man Pleads Guilty

The federal case against Marty Skyler Guillen includes robberies in Hayward, Daly City, Oakland, Fremont, and Castro Valley.

CASTRO VALLEY, CA — A 22-year-old San Leandro man pleaded guilty Friday to "robbery affecting interstate commerce" related to a four-day crime spree in 2018 from stores in the East Bay and Daly City, United States Attorney David Anderson announced.

Marty Skyler Guillen admitted to committing six robberies over four days in which he brandished a BB gun and demanded money or merchandise from employees. Loot taken included new iPhones, silver necklaces, and about $2,000 in cash.

Robberies were committed at phone stores in Hayward, Daly City, Oakland, Fremont, and Castro Valley, as well as a jewelry store in Hayward.

Guillen and co-defendant Elijah Kimani Crowder, 20, of Hayward, were indicted on Nov. 29, 2018 by a federal grand jury and charged under the federal Hobbs Act with conspiracy to commit robbery affecting interstate commerce.

Guillen's sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 2 before U.S. District Judge Jon Tiger in Oakland. He has accepted an agreement that includes guilty pleas to two of the robberies and admission to additional robberies, and has agreed to pay restitution for all of the incidents.

Crowder pleaded guilty in March to one count of aiding and abetting a robbery affecting interstate commerce. He is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Tiger on June 14.

The prosecution resulted from an investigation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with assistance from the Alameda County Sheriff's Office and the police departments of Daly City, Fremont, Hayward, Oakland, and San Leandro.
