Chabot Piles Up Points in 55th Gladiator Classic

The Chabot College men’s basketball team opened the season with gusto, crushing three opponents in the 55th Gladiator Classic this past week.

Over a three-day stretch, Chabot, ranked No. 4 in the preseason CCCMBCA North Region Poll, polished off Reedley 90-66, Diablo Valley 99-63 and College of Alameda 90-69.
The Gladiators will look to keep it rolling in the Shasta Invitational, Nov. 17-19.
Chabot’s Diggy Winbush was selected as tournament MVP, and three other Gladiators made All Tournament: Jaiden Rivera, David Hector and Zach Broadous.
Chabot head coach Keenan McMiller saw a lot to like about the Gladiators' efforts. He was pleased with the strong shooting that produced three straight outputs of at least 90 points.
"I'm excited, excited in their direction. They were super-upbeat today," McMiller said Monday. "Shortened day today, but everybody wanted to come in an get some extra work, so that's a good sign. We're going in the right direction. Overall, they're just good kids. They're really good kids. That's what I'm tryng to do, is bring in good people. We want to continue what we're doing and get better."
Against Alameda, Rivera led the way with 29 points and three rebounds, Winbush had 22 points and five assists, Broadous added eight points and five assists, and Hector tacked on eight points.
Of Winbush's play, McMiller said, "Shot it well. Made all the plays ... Starting offensively, he's definitely playing up to the way he could have played last year, but he was solid last year. He knows he has more of a leadership role this year. There's more expected of him, so I expect him to put high efficiency and consistent numbers each night."
Winbush shot an impressive 44 percent from the floor last year, which is among the top 10 in the state, the coach says.
Against East Bay-rival DVC, Broadous had 19 points and five rebounds, going 3 for 3 on 3-pointers, to pace a balanced offense. Hector had 18 points and three boards, Winbush added 13 points, five assists and two steals, Rivera had 13 points and three boards, Makaio Mims had 12 points and seven rebounds.
DJ Howard stepped up with nine points and seven rebounds.
In the opener against Reedley, Chabot set the tone in a big way. Rivera led the Gladiators with 16 points, three boards and two assists, Broadous was a sharpshooter going 4 of 5 from 3-point range for 14 points. Winbush reached into his bag of tricks with 14 points, eight assists, three steals, and three rebounds. David Ogunleye added 11 points, and Hector amassed 10 points, nine rebounds, three assists and five steals.
In addition to Chabot's honorees, Ohlone’s Matt Villanueva and Jude Jennings were also All Tournament. Four players made Honorable mention: Michael Fastion (Ohlone), Ben Tellez (DVC), Obadiah Curtis (Redley, and Petar Mijatovic (Alameda).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Chabot (1-2) routed visiting Mission 81-42 on Nov. 2 as Ariel Hines led the way with a double-double of 28 points and 16 rebounds, shooting 12 of 20 from the field and 4 of 5 on free throws.
Chabot's Kelly Tumlin had a versatile effort with 15 points, 10 steals, seven rebounds and five assists. Leilani Gonzalez was strong off the bench with 14 points, four rebounds and two steals. She was 4 of 6 from the field and 6 of 7 on free throws.
Tumlin also had 21 points in a season-opening loss to Santa Rosa on Nov. 1.
In a loss to San Jose City on Nov. 5, Chabot's Kendra Grant had a double-double with 16 points, going 5 of 5 on free throws, and 13 boards. Hines had a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds.
Chabot is back in action in the Merced Tournament, Nov. 10-12.
FOOTBALL
Jeremiah Crum had three receptions for 114 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown grab from quarterback Zach Taylor-Smith, in the Gladiators’ 38-14 defeat at City College of San Francisco in the Bay 6 Conference.
CCSF (6-3, 3-1) is ranked No. 12 in the state JCAB Football Poll and No. 10 in the CCCSIA Football Poll. Chabot falls to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the Bay 6. The Gladiators conclude the season at home against rival Laney (7-2, 3-1) at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12. Laney is ranked No. 7 in both state polls.
Taylor-Smith, who passed for 226 yards, scored in the second quarter on a 1-yard run against the Rams to cut the deficit to 21-7, but CCSF scored the next 17 points to put the game out of reach.
Ismael Sanchez led Chabot all carriers with 41 yards rushing on 16 carries.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Chabot men’s team had two individuals in the top five and finished tied for fifth with Sequoias in the team standings at the NorCal Championships on Nov. 5 in Fortuna.
The Gladiators’ Daniel Trampe was third in the 4.0-mile race in a time of 22:05.0 and Muhammed Ahmed was fifth (22:12.0). Chabot had 158 team points.
Hartnell’s Esteban Deniz was the NorCal champion in 21.43.0.
Chabot’s Mason Romant was 29th (23.38.0), Logan Phulps was 54th (24.44) and Tad Kawabata was 67th (27.14.0), rounding out Chabot’s top-five finishers.
In the NorCal 5K women’s race, Ameoly Garcia paced the Gladiators taking 47th in 24:38.0. Chabot’s Angela Tafur was 57th (26:14.0).
Hannah Hartwell of Redwoods was the women’s NorCal champion in 19:52.0.
