Chabot roundup: Fine season ends for women's team in Sweet 16

The No. 9-seeded Gladiators fall to No. 1 Sierra in Rocklin in the NorCal Regional; Ohlone edges Chabot 2-1 in well-pitched baseball duel.

What a journey it was for the all-freshman Chabot women’s basketball team, leading all the way to the state’s Sweet 16.

The Gladiators finished the season with an excellent 23-6 record after splitting games in the 2018 CCCAA Northern California Regionals.

In a very tough Round 3 assignment, Chabot, seeded ninth, fell to No. 1 Sierra (29-1) 99-64 last week in Rocklin.

With everyone back next season, look out for the Gladiators.

“Tough night, they were the better team,” Chabot coach Mark Anger said after the loss. “Great year with all freshmen. Look forward to next year, the future is bright.”

Anger also tweeted out: “Love this team.”

Coast-North champion City College of San Francisco, seeded fourth, fell to No. 5 Merced 63-58 in Round 3, thus Merced and Sierra advanced to the Big Dance, or the State Championship quarterfinals, beginning Thursday in Ventura.

Chabot was paced by Mia Finnie’s 16 points as she was 5 of 6 from the free-throw line. Standout guard Olivia Vezaldenos, who entered the night ranked 17th in the state in scoring at 19.6 ppg, suffered an ankle injury and sat out in the second half.

The gutsy Chabot squad opened the playoffs with an 85-78 road win over Feather River.

BASEBALL

In a tense battle between traditional Bay Area powers, Chabot fell to host Ohlone in Fremont 2-1 on March 2.

Trailing 2-0, Chabot threatened to take the lead in the top of the ninth. Tim O’Dalaigh drew an bases-loaded RBI walk to bring home Francisco Pedraza. But Ohlone reliever Joseph Jennison worked out of the jam to pick up the save.

Chabot leadoff Troy Bachand was 2 for 4, and Cole Coffey, David Langer, Jalen Bustos and Pedraza all had singles.

Chabot starter Chris Tonna allowed two hits and a run with three walks over three innings. Reliever Brian Tan allowed four hits and a run over 4.1 innings. Logan Caton was solid in the eighth, striking out one and allowing no hits.
