Chabot sports report: Langer on baseball tear, tennis starts hot

BASEBALL

Chabot College shortstop David Langer, a former Berkeley High star, is off to a torrid start this baseball season and ranks tied for 14th in the state in both batting average at .500 and RBIs with 12. Langer has 14 hits in 28 at bats.

Langer’s grand slam highlighted a seven-run uprising in the second inning of a 9-8 win over visiting Los Medanos on Feb. 6.
Langer was 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored in a loss to Fresno City on Feb. 10. Third baseman Tyler Rourke was 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI and Hunter Harris had a double among two hits.
Chabot also scored three in the top of the ninth in an 8-5 loss to Fresno City on Feb. 9. Langer had a two-run double and scored in the late rally.
The Gladiators (2-6), under new head coach Will Tavis, are embarking on a tough nonconference schedule in preparation for the Coast-Golden Gate. Heading into the week they’ve faced the likes of Santa Rosa (5-2 record), Sacramento City (7-1) and Fresno City (7-2).
The Gladiators will host Cosumnes River (7-2) at 2 p.m. Tuesday, before traveling to Diablo Valley (3-4) on Thursday and hosting DVC at 1 p.m. Saturday.
TENNIS
The Chabot men’s team finished a strong third place in the 14-team Modesto Junior College invitational tourney this past weekend.
Jay Pandit, an Irvington High graduate, was a finalist in Flight 2 singles and Roger Ween out of California High was a semifinalist in Flight 3 singles.
Noah Moecklmann (Pioneer Academy HS) was a semifinalist in Flight 4 singles. In doubles, and Pandit and Eli Gonzalez (Kennedy HS) were semifinalists in Flight 1.
Chazz Cruz (San Lorenzo HS) was the champion in Flight 6 singles.
The Chabot men will travel to Diablo Valley on Tuesday and will host Folsom Lake on Thursday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Chabot (20-5, 8-2 Coast-North) continued to roll with high-scoring wins over Skyline, 92-82, and Ohlone, 98-27.
“We have put ourselves in a good position for the playoffs,” coach Mark Anger says. “We need to close out the season strong and win out. Need to finish strong.”
Mia Finnie had a huge game against Skyline with 22 points and 14 rebounds, Olivia Vezaldenos had 18 points, five assists and four steals, and Kim Masulit had 17 points and seven assists. Mimi Sadberry provided a boost from the bench with 10 points, seven boards and five steals.
In the blowout of Ohlone, Ferrynn Steen had 16 points and nine boards off the bench.
The Gladiators will complete Coast-North play with two home games this week against Las Positas and College of San Mateo.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Gladiators dropped a pair of competitive games last week, 85-70 to Skyline and 83-73 to Ohlone.
Against Skyline, Elliot Harris had a team-high 19 points, making 9 of 15 field goal attempts, and Myckal Anderson had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Devin Smith had 11 points off the bench.
