CVSan: 30 CV Schools Attended CVSan’s 4Rs Field Trips in 2022/23
CVSan recently completed presenting virtual 4Rs Field Trips to 30 third-grade classes, which included approximately 730 students.
Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan) recently completed presenting virtual 4Rs Field Trips to 30 third grade classes, which included approximately 730 students. During the 4Rs Field Trip, CVSan presented a Kahoot! Path to Zero Waste sorting game, and students of the classroom with the highest score were rewarded with Little Miss Reduce reusable water bottles. Congratulations to Ms. Wesner’s third grade class for having the highest score among the 30 classes that attended the field trip.
4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot) Field Trips are typically offered to third grade classes and cover the topics of zero waste, sorting what goes where in recycling, organics and garbage, and climate change. 4Rs Field Trips this year were offered virtually via Zoom in a condensed and engaging 30-minute presentation. The presentation had an extra focus of food scrap recycling this year as CVSan celebrated its 20th year of food scrap recycling in the organics cart.
CVSan has hosted 4Rs Field Trips for Castro Valley schools since 1997. Over the last 17 years, 467 Castro Valley classes have participated in-person or virtually. The field trip provides students with an introduction to sustainability and zero waste education and engages them in exercises to learn about waste reduction, material composition, reuse, recycling, and composting. In a fun 4Rs dance during the field trip, students learn scientific concepts with movement. 4Rs Field Trips are an important component of CVSan’s Green Ribbon Schools Program.
