CVSan Coordinates Earth Day Clean-Up and Recycles Day Events

For the first time since 2019, Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan) coordinated an Earth Day Clean-Up event for the community. On Saturday April 23rd, over 150 members of the community participated in cleanup projects around Castro Valley. Volunteers picked up litter, planted trees and native plants, spread mulch, pulled weeds and much more. This project would not have been possible without the help of our sponsors: Alameda Countywide Clean Water Program, Alameda County Industries, Alameda County Public Works Agency, Alameda County Resource Conservation District, East Bay Regional Park District, Friends of San Lorenzo Creek, Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, Pete’s Ace Hardware, and Supervisor Nate Miley.

CVSan connected volunteers to the following four local sites coordinated by our sponsors: Castro Valley Creek, Downtown Castro Valley, Greenridge Park and Lake Chabot Park. CVSan also connected volunteers to two sites coordinated by local environmental non-profit ForestR.org around the freeway overpasses and underpasses by Center Street and Strobridge Avenue. CVSan has previously coordinated Earth Day Clean-Up events each April for over 20 years helping the community celebrate Earth Day in a districtwide clean-up. CVSan also presented its Recycles Day and Compost Give-Away on April 23rd. Within the course of six hours, over 1,200 CVSan residents and businesses participated in the event and demonstrated that they are responsible consumers!

CVSan residents and businesses dropped off mattresses, textiles, tires, documents for shredding, and e-waste for reuse and/or recycling. Additionally, 3,500 one-cubic foot bags of compost were distributed to event attendees.

The next Recycles Day and Compost Give-Away event will be held on July 23rd. Appointments are required. Acceptable items will be textiles and household hazardous waste.
