CVSan: High School Scholarship Winners

Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan) is pleased to announce that Agata Fedorowicz and Amelia Johnson are the winners of the 2022/23 CVSan Environmental Leader Scholarship! The graduates from Castro Valley High School (CVHS) will each receive a $1,000 scholarship award. Both winners were recognized with a certificate at CVSan’s Board meeting on May 2, 2023.

Agata Fedorowicz has demonstrated her commitment to environmental leadership with her community work. She is currently a Cleaner and Greener Staff and a Gleaning Volunteer with ForestR.org while going to school at Castro Valley High School (CVHS). With the opportunity at ForestR, Agata has been working on litter pickup, land restoration and fruit harvests in our community. Agata also creates unique artwork that depicts her interpretation of how life on Earth may look like when humans are long gone. The artwork shows the impact that climate change and waste could have on the environment and animals. Agata’s scholarship application essay described what environmental stewardship means to her:

Environmental stewardship to me, means taking an active role in doing what you can to be kind to the environment and showing others, by example, that each one of us can make a difference.”

Amelia Johnson has demonstrated her commitment to environmental leadership with her work at CVHS and in the community. While a student at CVHS she serves as an Environmental Commissioner for Leadership. Amelia has also volunteered for the last two years at the Oakland Zoo working on habitat restoration in the giraffe and bear exhibits. Amelia is involved in the community as a counselor for 6th grade students this school year for Outdoor School, teaching students about ecosystems and the importance of the environment. Amelia has also helped CVHS start up a food sharing table where any food not taken by the end of lunch is donated to the school’s Wellness Center. Johnson’s scholarship application essay describes what environmental stewardship means to her:

We need to lead people to treat the environment with more respect. Environmental stewardship is important to me as it is our future.

This is the tenth year CVSan has offered the scholarship to high school seniors. CVSan proudly recognizes these students for their work to encourage waste reduction and environmental protection within their school and community. For more information, visit cvsan.org/StudentScholarship.
