CVSan Holds Second Annual Zero Waste Week for the Community

To help Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan) residents learn more about how to select their path to zero waste, CVSan presented the second annual Zero Waste Week (formerly entitled Commitment to Serve Week) to the Castro Valley community from Tuesday, January 17th to Saturday, January 21st.

To kick off Zero Waste Week, CVSan installed the Museum of Bad Design at the Castro Valley Library. This display showcases one-time use products that are harmful to the environment alongside reusable products that can be used instead. The display is still available at the Library for viewing.

On Thursday CVSan hosted its first ever multilingual event – a Food Scrap Recycling Workshop in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin at the Palomares Hills Clubhouse. This event was presented in partnership with Pamela Evans, member of the Palomares Hills HOA Green Team. Approximately 30 attendees took home food scrap recycling pails and tips to help them compost at home. Additionally on Thursday and Friday, CVSan collected clothing and shoe donations for Goodwill Industries.

CVSan hosted two events on Saturday, a screening of the movie, Clean Bin Project, and a Fixit Clinic at the Castro Valley Library. Twelve volunteer coaches (five from Castro Valley) were on-hand at the Fixit Clinic to help participants learn how to fix their broken items such as a paper shredder, belt sander, and electronics. 74 percent of the items were repaired and approximately 100 lbs. of potential waste was diverted from the landfill.
