CVSan’s First Tree Fruit Gleaning – A Big and Delicious Success!

As a part of its Zero Waste Week 2018, on Tuesday, February 6th, CVSan organized a community tree fruit gleaning and harvesting of local citrus trees bursting with extra fruit. A total of 13 volunteers participated and worked hard to save the fruit preventing it from becoming waste. Volunteers of all ages spent nearly two hours in the beautifully warm February weather, picking fruit by hand or with CVSan’s fun tree fruit pickers on telescoping poles.

A total of 823 pounds of juicy and sweet oranges, grapefruits, and lemons were saved and delivered to the CV Food Pantry at Faith Lutheran. A special thank you to the nine homeowners on Forest Avenue, Heyer Avenue, Mabel Avenue, Meadowlark Avenue, and Santa Maria Avenue who were beyond generous to let CVSan and our volunteers glean so much fruit for those in need!

There is more citrus still out there for donating and/or taking. If members of the community would like to organize their own fruit gleaning, they should contact CVSan at contact@cvsan.org for information.
