CVSan wins Award of Excellence

The California Association of Sanitation Agencies (CASA) recently recognized Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan) and Oro Loma Sanitary District with an Award of Excellence as the recipient of the 2021 Outstanding Capital Project – Large Agency award for the recently completed Nutrient Optimization Project.

The Castro Valley/Oro Loma Sanitary Districts upgraded their jointly owned wastewater treatment plant to treat nutrients. The project is one of the first to provide nitrification and denitrification processes within the San Francisco Bay Area. By removing nutrients during treatment, Castro Valley and Oro Loma are lowering the potential for harmful impacts from high nutrient content being discharged into the Bay.

GM Roland Williams stated, “It is great to be recognized as an industry leader and innovator by CASA. This project represents a major investment in upgrading the largest single portion of our wastewater infrastructure, the wastewater treatment plant. CVSan funded 25% of the cost of the $24 million project. This investment will help ensure that the treated wastewater we discharge into the Bay will have a minimum impact on Bay health”.

CASA provides leadership, advocacy, and information to members, legislators, and the public, and promotes partnerships on clean water and beneficial reuse issues that protect public health and the environment. Established in 1996, the Award of Excellence is a statewide program that recognizes achievements in the clean water community that advance the utilization of renewable resources and promote efforts to achieve environmental sustainability and the protection of public health.
