Earth Day and Recycles Day 2019 Report
Over 630 volunteers at 12 Castro Valley schools and 5 public sites participated in the 17th annual Earth Day Clean-Up.
Clean-Up Event
The weather was beautiful on Saturday, April 13, 2019 for Castro Valley Sanitary District’s (CVSan’s) Earth Day events. Over 630 volunteers at 12 Castro Valley schools and 5 public sites participated in the 17th annual Earth Day Clean-Up. Volunteers cleared 50 cu. yards of plant debris to be composted and abated litter from Castro Valley streets, parks, schools, and creeks.
Volunteers enjoyed a free breakfast, provided by Castro Valley Sanitary District, Peet’s Coffee, Starbucks Coffee, and Karin Johnson Specialty Cakes and Pastries. Other event sponsors included Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley, Pete’s ACE Hardware, Alameda County Clean Water Program, East Bay Regional Park District, Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, Alameda County Public Works Agency, and Waste Management of Alameda County, Inc. (WMAC).

In the spirit of waste reduction and community action, each clean-up volunteer had the opportunity to select one of three charitable organizations to receive $5.00 on their behalf. A total of $ is being donated to the charities below. Donation amounts were determined based on individual volunteer selections.

Recycle Event and Compost Give-Away
CVSan presented its 17th free Recycle event and Compost Give-Away, also held on April 13th. Within the course of 6½ hours, Over 1,500 CVSan residents and businesses, the highest participation rate from any event held, showed their spirit as responsible consumers by participating in the Recycle event.
They recycled roughly 4,500 pounds of sensitive documents, 1,300 pounds of cardboard, 89 mattresses, 175 gallons used cooking oil, and 35,040 pounds of e-waste. A total of 600 construction and demolition debris vouchers were also distributed. Below are photos from the event held at Canyon Middle School.
5,340 1-cubic foot bags of compost were distributed to event attendees.
