Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin and The Farm Midwives

Birth With Treesa, along with Local Community Sponsors, and Vendors bring you The Bay Area Birth Film Festival!! This will be an annual event, marking Birth Awareness Week, held at The Historic Bal Theatre in San Leandro, CA on September 20, 2012.

2012 will mark our FIRST EVER event, and we are anticipating a wonderful evening. Please join us in supporting these wonderful films, women, and your community.  This Year we are offering a Double Feature in conjunction with special presentations and a Raffle!

The first movie will be Freedom For Birth and will be shown at 7pm. "Freedom for Birth is more than just a film. It marks the beginning of a movement that will focus global attention on the violations of women's rights during childbirth all around the world…FREEDOM FOR BIRTH is part of One World Birth, a global documentary film project intended to be a catalyst to improve birth around the world. One World Birth is the brainchild of a filmmaking couple, Toni Harman and Alex Wakeford. The difficult birth 4 years ago of our daughter inspired [them] to use [their] skills as filmmakers to "save birth and change the world!”

The second movie presented will be BIRTH STORY.  “The feature-length documentary BIRTH STORY: Ina May Gaskin and The Farm Midwives tells the story of counterculture heroine Ina May Gaskin and her spirited friends, who began delivering each other’s babies in 1970…Today, as nearly one third of all US babies are born via C-section, she fights to preserve her community’s hard-won knowledge. With incredible access to the midwives’ archival video collection, the film not only captures the unique sisterhood at The Farm Clinic–from its heyday into the present–but shows childbirth the way most people have never seen it–unadorned, unabashed, and awe-inspiring.”

Doors will open at 6pm with the first film starting at 7:00 pm.  Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.BalTheatre.com and cost $20 (+ service charge).  Ticket prices at the door will be $30.  There will be a discount offered at the door for teenagers. Ticket profits will go directly toward an increase in knowledge and birth resources for women-of-color and/or low-income in Alameda County.

THIS IS A BABY FRIENDLY EVENT - Anyone is welcome, and Breastfeeding is encouraged. Please be aware that both films will show graphic birth scenes.

Next year, 2013, looks to be even more inspiring as Birth With Treesa hopes to gather together young independent filmmakers for a contest/award ceremony.  In addition, there will be a dinner event with a very special guest speaker; stay tuned for more information.
