Families Honor Ancient Chinese Traditions

The colorful festival Chung Yeung was celebrated this week in Hayward.

HAYWARD, CA — Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward celebrated the Chinese grave-sweeting festival “Chung Yeung” this week with a colorful festival.

Chinese lion dancers performed, Buddhist and Taoist monks offered blessings and attendees paid their respects at the cemetery’s Wall of Honor. Visitors from all backgrounds attended the festival, observed as a time for happy communion and ancestor worship.

During Chung Yeung it is customary for families to take food, chrysanthemum wine to picnic onsite at cemeteries where loved ones are buried. The tradition remains an important part of cultural life in today’s Chinese community.
