Football: Bishop O'Dowd Firepower Too Much for San Lorenzo

Dragons standout Trenton Trammell scores incredible six touchdowns.

Bishop O'Dowd 62, San Lorenzo 7

The Star: Bishop O'Dowd athlete Trenton Trammell had a performance to remember, as the talented standout scored six touchdowns, including an interception and punt return for scores.

The Turning Point: After San Lorenzo tallied a passing touchdown down the middle to bring its deficit to within 21-7, Trammell and the Dragons quickly answered, marching right down the field before Trammell's 33-yard scamper into the end zone put the game away for good.

Bottom Line: The undermanned Rebels hung tough and played hard, but the Dragons' superior athleticism and depth was simply too much for the San Lorenzo team to handle on this night.

By the time San Lorenzo High running back Christian Batiste went over the century mark with five minutes remaining, the sold-out crowd in attendance at Bishop O'Dowd had largely dispersed and the game was well in hand.

Regardless of the final outcome, Batiste and the rest of his mates were able to garner some positives from his team's effort Friday night and with good reason.

Facing the squad many pundits consider to be the top contender for the Hayward Area Athletic League crown this season, San Lorenzo didn't back down, giving its league foe a decent effort before a game-changing sequence late in the first quarter ultimately doomed San Lorenzo in a 62-7 loss to Bishop O'Dowd, which is ranked No. 5 in Patch.com's North Coast Section Division III rankings.

"The kids fought all four quarters," Rebels coach Jacob Wright said. "I do think that we ran the ball well tonight. Christian Batiste had some good runs. The one thing I want to get better is getting the ball in (wide receiver Eric Johnson's) hands at little bit more but (O'Dowd) did a good job of keeping that from happening."

Batiste rushed for a team-high 101 yards and quarterback Brandon Murphy passed for 31 yards and a touchdown, but the duo's effort was not nearly enough to challenge the host Dragons. Bishop O'Dowd (6-1, 4-0 HAAL), coached by former Cal and NFL standout Hardy Nickerson, used its superior depth and athleticism to break away from the outclassed, but determined San Lorenzo (2-4-1, 0-4) squad on the school's homecoming game.

The Rebels, who were outgained by 151 yards, didn't do themselves any favors by turning the ball over three times and giving up a punt return for a score. The Dragons' onslaught on the scoreboard began during the opening possession of the contest, when O'Dowd defensive back Trenton Trammell picked off Murphy on the third play of the game as he raced into the end zone from 22 yards out, marking the first of the Dragons' nine touchdowns on the night.

The dynamic Trammell added to his spectacular effort on the very nextO'Dowd possession, when he took the snap from the "Wildcat" formation and raced to the edge for a 13-yard touchdown. Trammell, who also notched a game-high 132 rushing yards, would go on to add four more touchdowns to his personal tally, including a stellar 78-yard punt return for a score with 3:05 remaining in the third quarter.

The contest also marked the first time the Dragons have hit the football field in two weeks. The much-anticipated return of former O'Dowd coach Paul Perrenon was thwarted when Mt. Eden, where Perrenon now coaches, officially forfeited the game to the Dragons due to lack of players. Any concerns of possible rust due to the layoff was quickly answered when the dynamic O'Dowd offense marched up and down the field on multiple possessions in the first half.

"They capitalized on all of our mistakes," Johnson said. "I give Bishop O'Dowd their props."

San Lorenzo looked as if it was right back in the game with 2:44 remaining in the opening frame, when Murphy scrambled from the pocket and found a wide open Marcus Mosi down the middle. Mosi corralled the pass and sprinted into the end zone for a 33-yard touchdown catch that pulled the Rebels to within 21-7.

Up until that point of the game, San Lorenzo was also moving the ball relatively well on the ground. The shifty Batiste recorded a highlight 44-yard run down the left sideline in the opening moments of the game and Wright continued to call Batiste's number for the rest of the night. San Lorenzo's rushing numbers were even more impressive considering they were without a starting offensive linemen who was out with an injury.

"We really didn't care who we were up against on offense," Batiste said. "On all the runs, the guys were just running and blocking hard. I was able to find a couple of cutback lanes."

With a flurry of three-and-outs however, including untimely turnovers that gave the explosive O'Dowd offense a handful of short fields, the talent-gap between the two teams ultimately reared its head.

"Look, we're not done," Wright said. "It sucks. But we're not done."

O'Dowd has now beaten San Lorenzo six of the last seven games dating back to the 2004-05 season. The Rebels' lone victory in the stretch came last season, when San Lorenzo upset the team from Oakland, 26-21.

HAAL action continues next week as Bishop O'Dowd entertains Hayward on Friday at 7 p.m., while San Lorenzo hosts San Leandro on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
