Hayward Man Killed In Motorcycle Crash

REDWOOD CITY, CA - A 37-year-old Hayward man has been identified as the victim of a fatal collision on U.S. Highway 101 in Redwood City early Monday morning, according to the San Mateo County coroner's office.

Edwin Sandoval was driving a Harley-Davidson motorcycle going north on Highway 101 south of Whipple Avenue when he crashed into the right rear of a GMC van as a result of speeding between the middle and second to the right-hand lanes just before 1:45 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Art Montiel.

The impact pushed Sandoval's motorcycle into the second lane from the right, at which point it collided with a Honda, Montiel said.

When the Harley and Honda collided, Sandoval was ejected from the motorcycle and was consequently hit by a Toyota traveling in the middle lane.

Montiel said Sandoval was pushed by momentum all the way into the farthest left lane of northbound Highway 101.

Responding officers were called at 1:48 a.m. and performed CPR on Sandoval upon arrival until fire officials could arrive, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

An on-scene investigation closed all lanes of northbound Highway 101 for an hour, Montiel said.

Montiel said that all lanes were reopened by 5:21 a.m. in time for commute traffic.

The CHP is investigating the case, and Montiel said that it does appear that impairment may have been a factor in the collision.
