Hayward Police Seek Driver in Deadly Hit-and-Run

The vehicle was a dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee that had significant front-end damage.

A pedestrian who was killed by an SUV driver in a hit-and-run collision in Hayward nearly earlier this month has been identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau as 50-year-old Paul Roberts, who didn't have a permanent address.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and City Center Drive at 7:22 p.m. on March 2, police said.

Witnesses told police that Roberts was walking east near the crosswalk, but not in the crosswalk, when a dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee hit him, Sgt. Jason Corsolini said.

Roberts was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he died, police said.

The Jeep continued north and witnesses said it had significant front-end damage.

According to Corsolini, one witness told police that Roberts was walking against the "don't walk" signal and that northbound traffic had a green light. Another witness told police the Jeep had the green light and that Roberts appeared to be inebriated and crossing rather slowly, Corsolini said.

An investigation showed the traffic signal was functioning properly.

Police hadn't located the SUV driver as of last week. Corsolini couldn't immediately be reached today for an update on the investigation into the case.
