Homeless Growth In Alameda County: Immediate Plan To Tackle Issue

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — Two warming centers will be converted into winter shelters as part of $10.5 million in funding approved last week to address increasing homeless needs in Alameda County's unincorporated areas.

The funding, approved Tuesday by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, will target areas that have seen a rise in the number of unsheltered residents in recent years, such as Castro Valley, the
Asland/Cherryland community south of San Leandro and areas at the county's eastern edge near Livermore.

In addition to converting warming centers into winter shelters, the Unincorporated County Homelessness Action Plan will also fund a mobile hygiene bus to prove showers, restrooms and other services.

"Homelessness has become a countywide issue that requires solutions that reach all of our Alameda County communities," said Wilma Chan, president of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors.

The funds will be in addition to about $340 million in spending approved by the board in late November to address homelessness countywide through 2021.

In addition, the funding will support programs to prevent displacement and homelessness among seniors and households at risk of losing their homes.

The plan also calls for spending $310,000 to provide case management and other support to residents of a planned "Tiny Home Community" with six units of transitional housing on the grounds of the First Presbyterian Church in Castro Valley.
