Las Positas men split games to open play in stout Coast-North

Hawks' defense shines in overtime win against Ohlone

Las Positas sophomore Jason Augliera drained five 3-pointers, but the one that stuck out was a dagger triple you might see in a memorable game of H-O-R-S-E.

Augliera’s dream 3-pointer off the glass from the top gave the host Hawks a 77-72 lead in overtime, and Las Positas carried the momentum to an 88-79 overtime victory over East Bay-rival Ohlone in the teams’ Coast-North openers last week.

The Hawks (13-5, 1-1), ranked eighth in the state, followed the win with an 81-74 loss at Foothill in Los Altos on Friday. Las Positas will travel to formidable Canada-Redwood City (10-8, 2-0) on Wednesday and then will host state No. 1 CCSF (17-1, 1-0) on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Both games will tip off at 7 p.m.

So, did Augliera call his clutch bank shot?

“I didn’t call it, but I’ll take it,” Augliera said, smiling.

Augliera, a Heritage High graduate, has a knack for the trick shot. He also drained a 3-pointer from the left corner against Ohlone while falling backward to cut a four-point deficit down to 56-55. Hawks freshman Goose Persin followed with a three after a Renegades’ bucket to tie it at 58-58. Augliera later gave the Hawks the lead with another clutch three off an Alvon Marshall rebound and kick-out.

Overall, the back-and-forth game figures to foreshadow things to come in the Coast-North.

“It’s gonna be like that every game this league,” Augliera said. “I mean we’ve got San Francisco coming up, Canada, all those good teams. We’ve got to keep grinding.”

Las Positas freshman forward Peter Hewitt, who’s headed to Tulsa, epitomized the Hawks’ competitive fire. Hewitt’s monster slam off a length-of-the-court pass from Augliera in overtime upped the margin to 85-76 -- and added an exclamation point.

Augliera and Hewitt led the Hawks with 17 points apiece. Anand Hundal and cagey playmaker Alvon Marshall added 15 and 14 points, respectively.

The Hawks have two 6-10 ball-swatters in Hewitt and Hundal, a sophomore stalwart.

“Oh, it’s great, man,” Augliera said of the two big men. “You’ve got that little duo down there. It’s great.”

In the loss to Foothill, Nick Evans paced the Hawks with 18 points and Hewitt had a near double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Anand Hundal of Manteca added 13 points and eight boards.
