Man Accused of Killing Police Sergeant Booked into Jail
Oakland resident Mark Estrada is due to be arraigned today.

A 21-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a Hayward police sergeant during a traffic stop early Wednesday morning has been booked into Alameda County Jail and is tentatively scheduled for arraignment Friday, according to jail records. Mark Estrada, an Oakland resident, was booked on suspicion of murder shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday into Santa Rita Jail and is scheduled for arraignment at 2 p.m. Friday at the Hayward Hall of Justice, according to jail records.
Estrada is accused of killing Hayward police Sgt. Scott Lunger, 48, during a traffic stop near Myrtle and Lion streets around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday. Lunger, a 15-year veteran of the department, was shot without warning as he approached the driver’s side of a truck that he and another officer had pulled over for driving erratically, police said. The other officer returned fire at the truck but Estrada managed to flee, according to police. Estrada allegedly abandoned his truck in East Oakland and ended up at Highland Hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds.
