UPDATE: Police Sergeant Fatally Shot During Traffic Stop in Hayward

Police officials said shortly after 7 a.m. that no suspects had been arrested in the shooting.

Officials have identified the Hayward police sergeant who was shot and killed this morning during a traffic stop in Hayward.

Sgt. Scott Lunger was killed in the shooting, which occurred at about 3:15 a.m. during a traffic stop by Lunger and another officer, police Lt. Eric Krimm said.

Hayward Police officials tweeted, “We are heartbroken to report that HPD Sergeant Scott Lunger was killed in the line of duty this morning.”

Krimm said shortly after 7 a.m. that no suspects had been arrested in the shooting.

Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley tweeted her condolences to his family and friends, “Our thoughts are with @HaywardPD this morning, as well as the family and friends of Sgt. Scott Lunger. #Vale“

East Bay Congressman Eric Swalwell tweeted, “RIP fallen @HaywardPD Sgt. Scott Lunger. My heart goes out to his family and the law enforcement community. ”

KRON 4 News reported Lunger was shot in the back during the shootout in the area of Lion and Myrtle Streets.

According to ABC 7 News, a motorcade honoring the slain sergeant is currently underway at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.

Hayward police are holding a news conference at 10 a.m. at City Hall to release more information about the case.

Update at 8:32 a.m. by Bay City News:

Hayward police are investigating a shooting that injured an officer early this morning, a police lieutenant said. No suspects have been arrested in the shooting, which occurred at about 3:15 a.m. during a traffic stop, police Lt. Eric Krimm said. Krimm said police were not immediately releasing the condition of the officer and planned to hold a news conference at 10 a.m. today to release more information about the case.

Multiple media outlets are reporting that a police officer was injured following a shooting during a traffic stop this morning in Hayward.

According to KTVU News, the shooting occurred early this morning in the area of Lion and Myrtle Streets.

Hayward Police officials have not yet been reached for comment.
