Officials say about 1,200 students are missing from rosters, far beyond projections, and are now scrambling to understand why numbers fell and how to protect programs amid rising special education costs and labor negotiations.
   

• Man killed by officers after Highway 50 pursuit identified as Carmichael resident (sacbee.com) — Citrus Heights police officers were among those who opened fire on a 61-year-old Carmichael man after a late-night Highway 50 pursuit that ended near Hazel Avenue, killing him. Investigators say he pointed a weapon at officers before being shot and later dying at Mercy San Juan Medical Center, with multiple agencies now conducting parallel reviews of the shooting.
