Bike Thefts Solved In Claremont

A recent string of bicycle and bicycle component thefts has plagued Claremont. Now, one has been arrested for the crimes.

CLAREMONT, CA — Bike thefts have been on the rise in the Claremont area as police work to solve the crimes. Over the past few weeks, the Claremont Police Department has experienced an increase in reports of componentry being stolen from bicycles that have been locked to racks, in the area of The Village. In an effort to thwart this criminal activity, the Claremont Police Department installed surveillance cameras in the area.

On December 8th, 2017, at just before 11 p.m., the Claremont Police Department responded to the area of 250 W First St, regarding a male subject seen stripping off various pieces of componentry from a bicycle, which was locked to a bicycle rack.

The responding officers scoured the area for the suspect, however, they were unable to locate the suspect. The officers met with witnesses and reviewed video surveillance which captured the crime. Officers located the bicycle that had been dismantled and found that the estimated value was over $2,000.

Based on information provided, the Claremont Police Department Detective Bureau began conducting their investigation. Using various investigative means, detectives were able to track down the stolen componentry to a residence located in the 100 block of S Indian Hill Blvd. Claremont Police Department Detectives contacted Scott Scholl, 53 years old, and were able to retrieve the stolen bicycle componentry.

Scholl was placed under arrest for theft and possession of stolen property. It was later discovered that Scholl recently moved to Claremont and has an extensive criminal history. Scholl was transported to the Claremont Police Department Jail, where he was booked and later released on a written promise to appear.
