CHP Seeks Clues in I-10 Crash that Killed One, Injured 9

An investigation was underway Tuesday into a pair of collisions involving eight vehicles and a big rig that caught fire on the eastbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway in Pomona, leaving one person dead and nine injured, four critically, authorities said.

The collisions occurred at 8:12 p.m. Monday at Towne Avenue, the California Highway Patrol reported. The first involved four vehicles and a big rig and the second involved four vehicles, said CHP Officer Patrick Kimball.

At least one car ended up under the big rig, which was carrying furniture, said CHP Officer Tatiana Sauquillo.

Two of the injured were airlifted to a hospital in two helicopters, said Michael Pittman, a Los Angeles County Fire Department supervising dispatcher.

The crashes closed the freeway in both directions between Indian Hill Boulevard and Garey Avenue, Kimball said. The westbound lanes were reopened around 9:30 p.m., but the eastbound lanes remained closed. The eastbound carpool lane was reopened about 6 a.m. and the rest of the eastbound lanes were reopened about a half hour later, the CHP reported.
