The sanitary sewer system carries wastewater from private properties to water treatment plants via underground pipes known as sewer laterals and sewer mainlines. Sewer laterals are owned and maintained by homeowners and mainlines are owned and maintained by the City.

When inappropriate materials are flushed down toilets or dumped down drains, sewer backups can occur. Sewer backups can be very damaging and costly. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to help keep the sanitary sewer system in good working order:
- Flush only toilet paper
- Avoid putting fat, grease, and oil down the drain
Items that should never be flushed and contribute to backups include:

- Wipes (even those advertised as “flushable” cause backups and property damage)
- Toilet Cleaning Pads
- Paper Towels and Tissues
- Sanitary Napkins
- Diapers
- Dental Floss
