Now that the pandemic has killed off face-to-face networking for the foreseeable future, it’s time to bone up on best practices for video networking and other virtual meetings. Kelli Holmes, founder and CEO of TEAM Referral Network, offered insights during the May 13 Foothill Chambers Alliance networking meeting (which was, of course, virtual).

TEAM was founded in (2002) and its hundreds of chapters, which typically meet weekly, were able to quickly pivot from in-person to on-line thanks to TEAM’s experience with several chapters that were ‘virtual’ since their inception. In fact, she says that TEAM started virtual networking five years ago.

The point of networking, whether in person or on-line, is to foster a sense of community and connection, Holmes says. The first step is to build rapport by making a contact that makes you want to continue and build the relationship. This has four parts:

  • What to listen for – auditory cues and phrases the other person uses
  • What to look for – visual cues such as body language
  • What is the other person’s ideal prospect, and
  • Who are your mutual power partners – clients or potential clients you can collaborate on and create win-win opportunities. An example of power partners are real estate agents, insurance agents, mortgage lenders, and building trade contractors.

Participating in other organizations’ events (chambers of commerce, networking groups) is a great way to expand your networking base, she says. The upside during the pandemic is that this can be done with no commuting and no cost. Check the groups’ on-line calendars for upcoming opportunities.

Up your business game by updating your Linked In profile, she adds. “If you don’t have one, get one. It builds credibility and is search engine optimized. Show your stuff off!”

Now, the virtual meeting-specific best practices:

  • Dress business appropriately for your industry and the meeting … at least from the waist up.
  • Create a successful looking environment. Tidy up the room you’re using for your e-meetings, or try a virtual background.
  • Good lighting is flattering.
  • Camera angles are important too – no ceiling shots, please. Frame yourself within the screen.
  • Mute yourself when you’re not speaking to eliminate background noise.
  • Use video when you can. It helps build rapport.
  • Avoid inappropriate activities, such as eating, yawning, or playing with your hair.
  • Reduce distractions, such as children or pets interrupting your meeting.
  • In a group, ask questions using the ‘chat’ function.
