Prop 30 and Water Acquisition on Claremont Council Agenda

Proposition 30 and the water system acquisition will be among the topics discussed by Claremont’s council tonight.

The public meeting is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers, 207 Harvard Ave. in Claremont.

City staff has put together a report detailing some of what Proposition 30 entails. The measure is a tax that could raise some $6 billion to fund schools. If the measure does not pass, it would mean school districts across the country would lose millions from their budgets during the current school year.

Several educators spoke at the Oct. 9 council meeting and asked for the council to consider supporting Prop 30 arguing it would be devastating for the schools if it fails.

Council members asked that it be included in this week’s agenda.

A closed session discussion will also be held prior to the public meeting to review a Water Acquisition Feasibility Study report that was recently completed.

Officials said the discussion is important but it is not known what kind of action will be taken. If no action is taken, City Manager Tony Ramos may not have a report in the issue.

The city has been in a long running battle with its water provider Golden State Water Company over water rates.
