Authorities today identified two men killed when a box truck crashed into a tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder of a freeway transition road in Pomona.

The crash on the road from the eastbound Pomona (60) Freeway to the southbound Chino Valley (71) Freeway occurred shortly before 9 a.m. on May 22, California Highway Patrol Officer Francisco Villalobos said.

Jorge Garcia, 61, of Downey, and Jose Garcia, 25, of La Puente, died at the scene, said coroner's Chief Craig Harvey. There was no indication that the men were related to one another, Harvey said.

According to the CHP, the tractor-trailer was parked on the shoulder of the road, and the driver -- Jorge Garcia -- was outside his rig when the box truck crashed into the trailer, Villalobos said.

Jose Garcia was a passenger in the box truck, Harvey said. The driver of that vehicle -- a man in his 20s -- was hospitalized, Villalobos said. The transition road was closed for about six hours to accommodate the investigation and cleanup, the CHP reported.
