Here are the top five stories in Concord today:
- De La Salle High School this week announced who it will induct into its Athletic Hall of Fame for the Class of 2022. This year's list consists of five former student-athletes, including Major League Soccer's all-time leading goal scorer Chris Wondolowski, two coaches and two former De La Salle teams. "De La Salle has a rich and diverse sports history that is rooted in excellence," said Leo Lopoz, vice president for Athletics at De La Salle. "This year's inductees to our Athletic Hall of Fame demonstrate the breadth of what can be achieved through hard work, dedication, and community." The class of 2022 will be officially welcomed into De La Salle's Athletic Hall of Fame at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, in the school's Hofmann Student Center. The event is open to the public; registration is online. (Concord Patch)
- Wondering if your favorite candidate has thrown their hat in the ring? This great article from East County Today lists all of the candidates that have filed, to date, in the East Bay and a few in special districts and others across the county. Mayor Aliano is on the list. (East County Today)
- Did you see the smoke from the fire near Martinez on Thursday? It was a three-alarm vegetation fire that scorched the area of 4105 Pacheco Blvd., near Las Juntas Elementary School. It took about an hour to quell the blaze. Though it was near several structures, no structural damage was reported and no injuries were reported. (Claycord.com)
- On Monday, August 8 the Contra Costa County Veterans' Voices show will air an episode called "Corpsman Up!" In this episode, there will be a panel of medical experts who serve in the military. According to Claycord.com "the live panel will feature Doc Guy C. Lamunyon, the Veterans' Service Commander for The National Association of Military Medics and Corpsmen. The panel will also include veteran medics and corpsmen Crystal Cain, Killy Kitzmann, Mike Weber and Kristen Cassidy." The Veterans' Voices program will broadcasted live on Contra Costa Television (CCTV) at 7 p.m. It can also be seen live online at facebook.com/veteransvoices1. (Claycord.com)
- Three 13-year-old area swimmers clocked nation-leading times last week at the 2022 Far Westerns in Concord. Aasish Dangol of Albany Armada Aquatics took first in the nation for his age group for the 200-meter butterfly. Luka Mijatovic of the Pleasanton Seahawks leads the nation for 13-year-olds in the 400-meter freestyle and Ella Busquets from Diablo Aquatics has the best time in the nation for her age for the 100 backstroke. - The Walnut Creek branch library is closed Saturday, Aug. 6, because of staffing shortages, according to Contra Costa County Library officials. "For those who would like to come to a branch in person, please consider one of our other nearby branches, including the new Pleasant Hill Library, Ygnacio Valley, Concord, Clayton, and Lafayette," library officials said. - Concord's Parks & Recreation Preschool Program has openings for the 2022-2023 school year, which begins on Tuesday, Sept. 6. In the play-based program for kids ages 2-4, your child will work on a variety of developmental skills that will support their physical and socio-emotional growth.
