2nd Person Dies After East Bay Car Crash

BREAKING: Investigators are trying to determine whether he died from injuries in the crash, or a medical emergency that preceded it.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA -- A man whose wife died after a car crash near Martinez recently has also died from his injuries.

The man has been identified as 79-year-old Jerry Erben, according to the Contra Costa County coroner's office.

Erben, a Martinez resident, was driving a Chrysler sedan on state Highway 4 just before 10 a.m. on Dec. 30 when he missed the southbound Interstate Highway 680 connector and veered off the road crashing into a concrete divider, according to the California Highway Patrol. He died the morning of Jan. 1.

His wife, Paula Erben, 74, was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash and died after being transported to John Muir Medical Center, according to the CHP.

Investigators are still trying to determine whether Jerry Erben died from injuries suffered in the crash or a medical emergency that may have preceded it.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors, and the incident remains under investigation.
