Here are the top five stories today in Concord:

  1. Firefighters stopped the forward spread of a brush fire that erupted Friday in a commercial area of Concord, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said. The vegetation fire was reported at noon Friday in the 1500 block of Willow Pass Court, just north of state Highway 4, and prompted the evacuation of businesses. Shortly before 1 p.m., Con Fire reported that forward progress was stopped. (Concord Patch)
  2. The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano held their annual fundraiser Thursday night at West Wind Solano Drive-In in Concord. The movie they showed was "Back to the Future Part II." (Patch)
  3. Police believe that the shooting of a 51-year-old man in Oakley was self-defense. The 74-year-old woman who shot the man had a restraining order against him. There was a history of violence between the two and the man possibly was being physically violent again on Thursday night into Friday morning, according to Sgt. Brian Foreman. No arrests were made. (KTVU)
  4. The Walnut Creek City Council said "yes" to al fresco dining this summer when they unanimously voted Tuesday to extend pandemic-era outdoor dining into the summer while city officials continue developing a permanent program. While the program has drawn widespread support from local businesses and from residents — in a survey last summer, 82 percent of residents wanted to make the outdoor dining parklets permanent — some businesses have argued that the current parklets can obstruct their storefronts. The council plans to consider a long-term outdoor dining program at its June 21 meeting, which would be implemented over the next year if approved. (Claycord.com)
  5. On Feb. 12, a 31-year-old Hollister woman named Llaneth Chavez took her daughter, Malaya, to Blackhawk to meet her father for the first time. Malaya's mother and father had dated 4 years prior, but the father had resisted meeting Malaya. Within about an hour of getting to the Blackhawk home, Malaya and her mother were dead at the bottom of the swimming pool. The Blackhawk man said he had been in the shower when the accident happened, raising suspicions with authorities and family members. An autopsy confirmed both victims drowned and found "no obvious signs of trauma," according to court records. The coroner's determination on manner of death was still pending as of Thursday afternoon, authorities said. Authorities are now asking for your help. Anyone with information about this incident should contact the sheriff's Investigation Division at 925-313-2600. Tips can be emailed to email tips@so.cccounty.us. Anonymous callers can call 866-846-3592 to leave a voice message. (Greeley Tribute)
