🌱 Area Holiday Guide + Hate Crime Conviction + FOG Recycling

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Concord.

(Patch Media)

Hey, neighbors! It's me again, Jeri Karges, your host of the Concord Daily.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny. High: 64 Low: 45.

Here are the top stories today in Concord:

  1. Peruse Patch's annual holiday guide. Find nearby events and select the outings that appeal to you and yours. Many events kick off soon, while several require advance bookings, and space may be limited, so hurry! You'll find events from Albany to Walnut Creek and everywhere in between. (Concord Patch)
  2. A jury has found Concord resident Ross Farca guilty of four felony charges and a misdemeanor hate crime relating to Farca's June 4, 2019 possession of an assault weapon recovered after Facra posted anti-Semitic mass murder threats on an online gaming platform, according to the Contra Costa District Attorney's Office. In addition to the firearms and hate crime convictions, Farca was convicted of two counts of criminal threats made towards the lead investigating officer during the course of a follow up search of Farca's residence on October 8, 2019. 3. In response to the Nordstrom's attack, Walnut Creek will beef up its police presence by spending $2 million over 18 months adding five officers to a new downtown beat, adding security cameras to the area, and flying a tether drone over Broadway Plaza. At a special meeting Wednesday morning, the City Council unanimously voted to spend half of its remaining unallocated federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds on measures to prevent a repeat of the coordinated ransacking of Nordstrom on Nov. 20. (Claycord.com)
  4. During their meeting on November 10, the Contra Costa Community College District received a presentation about Ward Equalization based on the 2020 Census. The college redistricting process will begin during a public hearing at their Dec. 8 meeting, with one map presented by District staff and attorney, and must be completed by the end of February. Although state education code requires the population of each ward be equal "as nearly as may be", according to 4CD staff the wards can legally have a population deviation from one to the other as great as 10%. (Contra Costa Herald)
  5. The City of Antioch has created a Façade Improvement Program (FIP). The program will provide building and business owners with an opportunity to improve their building's storefront with a financial incentive. The FIP allows for improvements to signage, awnings, paint, and other storefront enhancements. Businesses are able to apply for the program starting December 1st thru the Economic Development Department. Guidelines and applications are available now online and on the first floor at Antioch City Hall, 200 H Street Downtown. (East County Today)

  • Cooking Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) down the drain (intentional or unintentional) can cause major sewage backups, clogs, and overflows. Instead of pouring holiday cooking grease down the drain, bring it to Ironhouse Sanitary District (ISD) for proper recycling. The program runs year-round, however, the District opens for a special Saturday collection on Dec. 4 from 9 a.m. to noon for easier access for those who work during the week.
  • Holly's back. Tell a friend! #HollytheHolidayElf is back for a 3rd season of visiting local business and attending holiday events around our community! Be sure to follow the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce to see Holly's daily updates. (Facebook)
