(Patch Media)

Happy Wednesday, people of Concord! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.

First, upcoming weather:

  • Variable clouds with showers. High: 72 Low: 61.

Here are the top stories in Concord today:

  1. The National Weather Service says the Bay Area and Monterey should expect an "unsettled weather pattern" over at least the next week, with three systems hitting the area and a potential "atmospheric river" arriving Sunday. One system passed through on Tuesday with another arriving Thursday, and rain on and off through Friday, the highest totals of which will again be in the North Bay. If you're not familiar with an atmospheric river, this graphic will help. The heaviest rain will move through quickly, leaving lingering showers behind, with localized gusty winds. (Claycord.com)
  2. Meals on Wheels Diablo Region is seeking volunteers to help deliver grocery bags. The Grocery Bag Program provides food to low-income seniors in Oakley, Bethel Island, Brentwood, Martinez, Concord, Walnut Creek, Pittsburg, and Antioch, serving 160 clients in the area, but many more need the assistance. Ted Dason, who's been volunteering since February says "If anyone is considering being a volunteer, I tell them, it's super rewarding and it literally only takes about two hours every month." If you would like to learn more or volunteer for the Meals on Wheels Diablo Region's Grocery Bag program, contact Casey Claibourne at cclaibourne@mowdr.org. (East County Today)
  3. The Walnut Creek Homeless Task Force is hosting a free public Community Forum on Homelessness in Walnut Creek on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, 6–8 pm, via Zoom. This is the fourth in a series of forums designed to give community members and business owners a platform to discuss homelessness in Walnut Creek and to learn about the actions being taken in the city and county to address homelessness. This forum will focus on mental health resources in the area for homeless people. The forum will kick off with remarks from Walnut Creek Mayor Kevin Wilk followed by a panel discussion and a Q&A. (News 24/680)
  4. An Orinda woman died after she was found unconscious in a burning home on Silver Oak Terrace Monday. Coroner's deputies identified the deceased as Anelli P. Stamm, 74, a resident of the home, on Tuesday morning. (News 24/680)
  5. A California Highway Patrol officer was allegedly bitten by a woman he and other officers were attempting to apprehend along Highway 4 in Concord on Sunday. The injured officer and at least one other "cover" officer attempted to stop a woman spotted walking, pants-less, on the freeway at Arnold Industrial Way. The unidentified woman was also transported to a local hospital for observation. (Concord News Journal)
