Here are the top stories in Concord today:
- Cold and unsettled weather is expected to continue in the Bay Area through much of the week, according to the National Weather Service. The coldest of the systems is expected to come through the region on Tuesday. Low elevation snow may be possible Tuesday, mainly above 1,500 feet, with possible trace amounts in the North and East Bay Valleys. (Claycord.com)
- The Walnut Creek police department cautions you to not advertise what you got for Christmas. Break down all boxes and avoid putting them in the recycle bin right away. Those who wish to burglarize your home, will be looking for those big ticket item boxes in your recycling before and after the holidays. (Claycord.com)
- Talk about a Humbug! On Christmas Day, the Antioch Police Department responded to 7-Eleven at Hillcrest and E. Tregallas for a report of a male who pulled out a knife during an armed robbery. The suspect was located and surrendered after police used de-escalation techniques and the threat of a K9. Police took the man into custody. No other information was available. (East County Today)
- The Department of Justice announced, Thursday, nearly $126 million in funding to advance school safety under the STOP School Violence Act. The Antioch Unified School District received $492,451 in COPS (Community Oriented Policing Services) funds and was the only district in the county, and only one of 10 in the state to be awarded a grant. AUSD will use the funds "for safety and security infrastructure, upgraded cameras, radios, lighting and more," said Superintendent Stephanie Anello. "This grant will free up funding that would have gone to safety and security infrastructure so that we can hire private security." (Antioch Herald)
- Two California Highway Patrol officers suffered minor injuries when they were struck by a fleeing suspect's vehicle during a traffic stop in Bay Point early Sunday. The incident took place at around 3:30 a.m. near Bailey Road and Canal Road. Injuries to the officers were described as minor, with both treated at a local hospital and released. (News 24/680)
