BART Identifies Stations For Possible Closure In 2026

The BART board weighs "doomsday" cuts today amid budget deficit that would hit Concord.

CONCORD, CA — BART officials have identified 10 stations that could shut down in 2026 if voters reject a proposed funding measure, outlining what transit leaders describe as a “doomsday” plan to address a massive budget deficit.

The potential closures would represent about 20 percent of the system’s stations and affect roughly 12 percent of current ridership.

But a closing could severely affect commuters from Contra Costa.

The board is meeting today to consider different funding scenarios.

Transit officials said the closures would impact service along the Yellow, Blue and Orange lines.

The proposal is part of a broader set of cost-cutting measures under consideration. In addition to closing stations, BART is weighing ending service at 9 p.m., reducing weekend operations and potentially suspending service on most system segments built after 1976.

The BART Board of Directors is expected to vote on the contingency plan at the end of February 2026. Officials say the measures would only take effect if the funding measure fails, but warn that without new revenue the agency faces a severe structural deficit.

The stations at risk are:

  • Pittsburg Center
  • North Concord/Martinez
  • Orinda
  • South San Francisco
  • San Bruno
  • Castro Valley
  • West Dublin/Pleasanton
  • South Hayward
  • Warm Springs/South Fremont
  • Oakland International Airport Connector
