Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- Blazing red, soft pink, golden and glowing sunsets have filled Bay Area skies recently, and the factors that produced them – high pressure, light winds and moisture high in the sky – are likely to continue for the next few days if not longer, according to a National Weather Service meteorologist. First all, you have high pressure which causes any particles to sink closer to the surface. Bay Area winds have been lighter than usual. Because the winds have been light, the particles in the atmosphere aren't moving around as much. When the particles are this high, they are ice particles or ice droplets, and ice can magnify the intensity of color, the meteorologist said. It's likely that those beautiful sunsets will continue, at least for a while, so get out those cameras and have them at the ready for some gorgeous shots over the next few days! (Claycord.com)
- Have a direct say in democracy by participating in BART's redistricting meetings. The next virtual meeting is scheduled for 6pm on January 22nd. BART has rolled out mapping tools to enable public input for redistricting. They can be found at this link. (Contra Costa Herald)
- First-term Dublin City Councilmember Shawn Kumagai became the Tri-Valley's first candidate to announce plans to run for California Assembly District 20 earlier this week. Kumagai is seeking to replace outgoing Assemblymember Bill Quirk, who announced last month that he will not seek another two-year term this year, following a decade serving in the State Legislature. - Residents in Concord facing inflation and an unrelenting pandemic may find a little bit of relief at the gas pump this summer. Under Gov. Gavin Newsom's budget proposal, the state's summer gas tax hike may not take effect. Newsom unveiled his budget plan on Monday and introduced his "$523 million dollar gas tax holiday."
