Here are the top five stories today in Concord:
- There will be a small chance for light rain on Tuesday Feb. 22, and freezing temperatures are possible for some areas, the National Weather Service Bay Area announced Friday morning. Changes could come as early as Sunday. Gilroy has the highest chance of rainfall at around 38%, according to a NWS map. Overnight temperatures could hit the low 30s in many parts of the Bay Area, the NWS said. NWS posted a map of next Wednesday's low temperatures. San Francisco's low is predicted to be around 42 degrees, 34 in Concord, and 35 in San Jose. (KRON4)
- A Contra Costa County Superior Court ruling last week was a major victory in Save Mount Diablo's legal challenge of a housing development proposed for the highly visible ridgeline between Pittsburg and Concord, the nonprofit said Thursday. The development would have brought a new residential subdivision to 606 acres of ridgeline and hillside grazing land in what is currently unincorporated Contra Costa County, immediately south of the city of Pittsburg. "It remains to be seen whether the developers, Discovery Builders, Inc. and Faria Land Investors, LLC, or the City of Pittsburg will appeal the decision," said Seth Adams, land conservation director for Save Mount Diablo. - The Contra Costa Community College District board accepted the resignation of chancellor Bryan Reece on Wednesday. The board twice put Reece on paid leave - in September (from which he returned the next month) and earlier this month — for what the district said were personnel reasons. The board on Wednesday approved a contract with interim chancellor, and former vice chancellor for education and technology, Mojdeh Mehdizadeh, to remain in the post until June 30, 2024. - East Bay Regional Park District crews are still on the lookout for a large boa constrictor snake that was spotted in Anthony Chabot Regional Park earlier this week. According to park officials, the snake is not venomous or a threat to the public, but may be in danger because it is a non-native species and the Bay Area has colder weather than the snake's usual habitat of warm tropical forests or grasslands. Authorities do not know how the snake ended up in the park, but said abandoning any animals in regional parks is illegal. Anyone who sees the snake is asked to call park staff at (510) 690-6676 or a non-emergency public safety line at (510) 881-1833. Members of the public are asked to take a photo and map the sighting but to not try to approach the snake or capture it. (Claycord.com)
- Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Lynn Mackey congratulated Brentwood Union School District's Edna Hill Middle School for being named a "California School to Watch" for the sixth time, an honor, which goes to schools that have demonstrated sustained progress as a high-performing California middle school. To earn the California School to Watch designation, schools must complete an extensive application and host a site visit by middle grades experts. In order to retain the designation, each school is re-evaluated every three years. These high-performing model schools demonstrate academic excellence, social equity, and responsiveness to the needs of young adolescents. (East County Today)
