Here are the top 4 stories today in Concord:
- First responders who have suffered physical or psychological injury now have an opportunity to get support from canine companions, thanks to Clayton resident Mark Ruefenacht and his nonprofit National Institute of Canine Service and Training. "There are other organizations helping veterans get support animals, but not a lot helping our first responders" explains Ruefenacht. Foster families raise the dogs and bring them to the Concord facility for training until they graduate from the program. The group is always looking for foster families and volunteers who help in many ways. Funding mostly comes from individual donors and grants. The program already has 10 applicants for the next training round. (Pioneer Publishers)
- A 29-year-old Richmond man died of his wounds after an aborted robbery attempt at a San Pablo Nation's restaurant Sunday. An off duty UC Berkeley Police officer happened to be on scene when the incident unfolded. The officer shot the suspect as he attempted to rob a cashier at gunpoint. The unidentified campus police officer is believed to have fired a single shot. The suspect was declared deceased at a local hospital. (News 24/680)
- A day after Antioch Mayor Lamar Thorpe released photographs of an active crime scene he was provided special access to, it appears he did not have permission to do so. He also published information about the incident that Interim Antioch Police Chief Tony Morefield shared with him but had yet to be released to the public either by Morefield or the City's Public Information Officer (PIO) Rolando Bonilla. According to City Councilmember Mike Barbanica, Interim Police Chief Tony Morefield told him that he did not authorize anybody to enter the crime scene, including the mayor, nor did he authorize the taking or release of photographs and was unaware any of that occurred from the mayor. - After being uninhabited for more than a decade since its owner's death, Danville's last orchard at the vacant Borel property could be on track to becoming home to a new housing development. Officials say it also fund the late Armand Borel's vision of an agricultural park on the property. The application remains in the preliminary stage, with no formal application yet filed with the town of Danville, according to Nicola Shihab, spokesperson for the town government. - For Joyce and Bob Shapiro, the holiday season begins in October when they gingerly unwrap the exquisite decorations they've been collecting for decades to deck out their home across from Kottinger Community Park. Friends vie to visit the Shapiro home when the decorations are in place, and Joyce and Bob enjoy entertaining. Many times they've offered a dinner at their festive holiday home for eight to 10 people at fundraising auctions for nonprofit groups. Check out photographs of their beautiful trees here.
